The ZukunftsClub OWL , a new series of events that makes it easier for older people to access digital technologies, was launched in mid-March. The initiative was launched by VHS Detmold-Lemgo and the Institute for Science Dialogue (IWD) at OWL University of Applied Sciences - with the aim of strengthening digital sovereignty and communicating modern technologies in an understandable and practical way.
Around 30 interested guests came to Haus Wippermann in Lemgo for the kick-off event on the topic of ChatGPT - Smart solutions for everyday life. The focus was on questions such as: What exactly is artificial intelligence? How does ChatGPT work? And how can I integrate this system sensibly and securely into my everyday life?
The event kicked off with an expert presentation by Dr. Gesa Benndorf from Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, who explained the basics of AI, machine learning and ChatGPT - factually, clearly and with a special focus on the everyday lives of older people.
We from KreativInstitut.OWL [ Kristina Heidebrecht and Anna-Lena Büker ] gave a practical insight into the use of ChatGPT. In our part of the workshop, we guided the participants through the user interface, explained the structure of prompts and showed concrete applications in everyday life - from recipe ideas and travel planning to support in writing creative texts. Participants were able to get directly involved themselves, ask questions and receive personalised support.
The atmosphere in the room was open, interested and characterised by a genuine joy of discovery. Many participants were surprised at how intuitive and helpful AI applications such as ChatGPT can be - especially when they are introduced to them step by step.
Dr. Sonja Girod from VHS Detmold-Lemgo emphasised at the end: ‘Our aim is to communicate new technologies in such an understandable way that older people also have access to digital developments and can actively participate in them.’
The premiere of the ZukunftsClub OWL was therefore not only an informative workshop, but also an important impulse for more digital sovereignty in an increasingly networked world. Further events are already being planned.
