The MONOCAB project is developing innovative, single-rail cabin vehicles that make disused railroad lines usable in both directions. The aim is to supplement local public transport in rural regions with individual local passenger transport. The research association is working on a safe, reliable and economically feasible system.

A research consortium consisting of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Fraunhofer IOSB-INA is working on the implementation of the project. The central task is to prove that MONOCABs can be implemented safely, reliably and economically.
At the Lemgo Innovation Campus of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, up to six employees from different departments are working on the MONOCAB project at the Institute for Energy Research. The single-track rail vehicle has already proven to be a complete success in its prototype status. For an initial presentation of the MONOCAB, a visual concept was developed that shows a section of track across the newly constructed campus. The route begins at the campus-based Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, runs via the InnovationSPIN and the vocational schools and ends at the connection to the regional train service in Lippe. This visualization was created using drone images of the route and existing 3D data from the MONOCAB. The previous visual realization was limited to a conceptual understanding. The main task of KreativInstitut.OWL was therefore to develop a photorealistic end product.
When expanding local public transport in Germany, new rail sections are often problematic due to high costs and low profitability, especially in rural regions. Many lines are closed here because the extensive network is difficult to operate economically.
The innovative MONOCAB project pursues a new approach under the motto “Use what's there”: disused lines are made usable again in both directions using single-track cabin vehicles. The aim is to supplement local public transport in rural regions with individual public transport (IPNV).
