Monocab XR - The Experience

Welcome to the fascinating world of the Monocab XR! This or something similar is how our colleagues from Monocab will greet guests after the media project, e.g. at trade fairs, events or in the in-house showroom. Together with students, a mixed reality application was created in which you can not only try out how the Monocab works, but also drive in virtual worlds.

Monocab? What's that?

MONOCAB OWL develops self-operating cabins for 4-6 passengers. Special about this is that the cabins run on previously disused tracks, to be precise just one of them. This means that 2 monocabs can meet at any time on the same track. This type of transportation is particularly interesting in rural areas, where there is both a poor transport infrastructure and unused railway lines. For more information visit MONOCAB OWL

How does Monocab XR work?

The project began with the careful preparation of the monocab as a detailed polygon model, which is then virtually staged using the Meta Quest 3 and its Passthrough AR mode. This unique installation allows users to immerse themselves in a fully immersive experience. Materials and functions such as the opening and closing of doors, lighting effects, sounds and the balance mechanism in the glass floor are brought to life.

Users start in passthrough mode and see the real environment through the VR goggles before being immersed in the virtual world of the monocab with an impressive shader effect. Here they can look around, even take a seat (as there is a seat in the same place in reality) and experience other interactive elements. The experience culminates in a virtual ride through impressive landscapes before dissolving again and returning to the real world

The Monocab XR is not only an impressive installation, but also a versatile tool that brings the design process to life through virtual reality.

Key Facts:

  • Student group who independently turn the task into a product within one semester

  • Use of Unity as game engine, Blender and Maya to create the 3D models and Substance Painter for texturing

  • The performance adjustments were made for the Quest 3 as the target system (mobile as standalone XR glasses and with good passthrough)
