OCANIA – Networked Music Performances in the Metaverse

As part of a collaborative project with the Distributed Performance Course at New York University, the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Trento and Toplap Detmold, a multi-instrument environment was created in the metaverse and played in an improvisation with distributed musicians in the USA, Italy and Germany.

How does music sound when it takes place in the metaverse rather than on stage?

The metaverse holds unexplored potential for musical composition practice and performances. As people are networked via the internet in shared virtual environments, it is also a suitable platform for so-called telematic music performances or networked music performances. Here, the musicians are not on a shared physical stage, but play together from different locations with the help of network technologies.

In contrast to two-dimensional forms of presentation using monoscopic video and stereo audio streaming, the metaverse as a virtual stage represents a particularly immersive form of network technology for musical performances - for both the artists and the audience! Here, environments, stages and instruments can be designed completely freely - unlike in reality. VR devices and spatial audio offer both immersion and unimagined creative potential.

Stages in the metaverse

Together with students from the Distributed Performance Course (led by Prof. Sarah Weaver) at New York University, a joint improvisation performance was created in OCANIA for a networked music performance concert.

Together with Toplap Detmold and the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Trento, we have created OCANIA - a multi-instrument environment in the metaverse. Developed with the PdXR system and the visual live coding language StackBeat L.O.V.E. developed at the KreativInstitut.OWL, a metaverse environment was created on the Internet for making music together.
